International Blues Challenge
About the Challenge
The International Blues Challenge - aka "IBC" - represents the worldwide search for those Blues Bands and Solo/Duo Blues Acts ready to perform on the international stage, yet just needing that extra big break. Dues-paying affiliate organizations of the Blues Foundation - including the Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Society and hundreds of others around the world - are each allowed to select one band and one solo/duo act each year to represent their region in the International Blues Challenge.

The 41st International Blues Challenge will take place on January 13th – 17th, 2026 in Memphis, TN.
The IBC is judged by blues aficionados and professionals from around the US, all of whom have years of experience listening to, producing, teaching and/or creating blues music. The Blues Foundation has established a list of criteria by which all acts are evaluated throughout the five days of the IBC.

Affiliate organizations are required to stage a regional Blues Challenge, to choose the most qualified acts to represent their organization in the International Blues Challenge, held each January in Memphis, TN along historic Beale Street.

Affiliate organizations are encouraged to follow The Blues Foundation’s format and rules during their local challenges, but each organization is free to structure its preliminary rounds as it sees fit, as long as a true challenge, between multiple acts takes place, resulting in a single band and/or solo/duo act being selected.

Hotels near Beale Street usually offer special rates through the Blues Foundation website, but rooms can get booked up early. It is a good idea to make your lodging reservations as soon as you know you are going.

You might also consider checking into VRBO or Air B&B options, as there are a few of those fairly close by, but these are not offered through the Blues Foundation.
